Interaction with Young IAS, Mr Masoom Ali Sarvar

Quality of  study matters much more than its duration
We are launching the Special Column, Azad Minds, in Salamevatan Newspaper with an interaction of a Young Mind, Mr. Masoom Ali Sarvar, who has cleared the IAS Exam recently. Currently he is undergoing the IAS Training in Aligarh .This interaction is intended to provide an insight behind the preparation of Civil Services Exam and sharing the experience of success in it.

SV: Please tell us about yourself and your career path.
I belong to Aurangabad district in Bihar. Passed my graduation in 2003 from there only and joined Paramilitary Services and served there for five years. After that I took IAS Exam.
SV: At what point in life you decided that you want to take IAS as your Goal. What has been your motivation for IAS?
In 2006, decided to take IAS. Because this is a supreme service in India in which you get tremendous number of opportunities to serve Country and her People which are not there in other services.
SV: Please Guide the IAS aspirants. How should they go about studies etc. Do’s and Don’ts. Your Study Routine when you were preparing for the same, etc.
I did not take any coaching for IAS. Preparation takes a long time and requires dedication and commitment. Many people start preparing for IAS but, on the mid-way, they give up and quit. One has to take special caution while choosing the Optional Subjects, has to study with focus. It is not necessary to study for 8-10 hours or so, but studying with full focus and attention is a must to master the subject.
SV: Which Subjects you chose for the Prelims and Mains Exam? Which Combination is most scoring?
It is a myth that some subjects are more scoring and some are less. You should always choose that subject which interests you so that you can enjoy it when you go deep into its studies. I took History in Prelims and Political Science in Mains Exam.
SV: What was your preference Order for different services (IAS, IPS, IFS etc.)
I gave the preference as IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS. The Preference Order is purely the choice and interest of the candidate.
SV: How do you feel after this achievement of getting selected for these coveted Services?
Of course, I felt very happy that I was able to live up to the dreams of my Parents.
SV: What difference you find in yourself (Your personality, thinking etc) before and after clearing the most sought after position in India?
I did not find much difference. The Basic Thinking will not change. I have worked at the Chennai Airport, it is evident that I got a broader sense of thinking, but there is not much difference in principles and beliefs.
SV: Please tell us something about the Training after Clearing the IAS Exam. Its different milestones etc.
The training after IAS is for 2 years. First, there is a foundation training which is attended by IAS, IPS, IFS etc. after the foundation course, phase 1st starts which consists of a tour of whole India and a visit to every state of the country understanding the culture, tradition and way of administration. This is followed by 3 months’ State training which I got in Lucknow. After that there is a joint training for 15 days of candidates of all IAS Cadres. This is followed by 9 months’ district training in which the candidate is allocated in a district and he works with different officers in the administration of District to understand the function of District administration. Currently I am in this phase of District Training. District Training is followed by 2 phases of 2 months each and then a foreign trip of 15 days. After these traiings, there will be an ideas sharing session among the candidates who have taken the training in 120 districts. This will be followed by posting in the Cadre in which the candidate has been selected.

SV: Your views about the change in the Pattern of UPSC Exam to include aptitude as CSAT.
This is an initiative in the test pattern. Earlier there were two optional subjects. Now the Common paper will be there one of General Studies and the other of Aptitude with the name of CSAT. (Civil Services Aptitude Test).
SV: Please share some incidents or Experiences from your life which you would like to share with today’s youth.
In my first attempt, I got a rank of 608, but I again tried and got a rank of 128 hence One should never get disappointed and One should always keep trying. It is the best if right after high school, a student is given guidance to take IAS. According to this Plan, he takes all the subjects and it will become easy for the candidate to clear the Exam.
SV: Take home message for people who wants to take IAS Exam in future?
It is best if the child is introduced to the IAS exam right after high school and given guidance to take IAS. Accordingly he selects the subjects in Class 12th and then in graduation. In this way it will become very easy for the candidate to clear the Exam. At graduation, the mind of the student is at its threshold. Hence One should start preparing for IAS immediately after Graduation. This approach was best when there are Optional Subjects in the IAS Exam. With the introduction of Aptitude Test, the approach may change.
SV: Take home message about Salamevatan. What we should do to make a difference in Society?
Newspaper is a link which creates a communication medium between Government, Public and NGOs and serves for the benefit of all the communities.
