28 AMU students and alumni get Sir Syed Global Scholar Award

ALIGARH June 27: Twenty-eight students and alumni of the Aligarh Muslim University have been selected for the Sir Syed Global Scholar Award (SSGSA), for the academic session 2024-25, by a US-based non-profit organization, Sir Syed Education Society of North America.

Dr Sajad Sheikh and Mr Sachin Gupta, past beneficiaries and current co-chairs of the SSGSA programme informed that these students have been selected after an exhaustive selection process, including academic performance, research or work experience, internship, curricular and extracurricular activities by 13 assessment panels.

Dr Sheikh and Mr Gupta have thanked the university administration for their cooperation and support in carrying out the selection process.

The recipients of the SSGSA scholarship will receive financial support and personalized mentorship through the application process for higher education abroad. They will also receive assistance for required standardized tests such as GRE/GMAT and TOEFL/IELTS, along with the application fees for up to five universities of their choice, they added.

301 AMU students get scholarship from AAA-DC


ALIGARH June 8: Three hundred and one students of the Aligarh Muslim University have been selected for the award of the merit scholarship given by the Aligarh Alumni Association Washington DC (AAA-DC), USA for the sacademic session 2023-24. Each student will get a financial assistance of Rs 15,000/- under this scholarship.

Prof M.M. Sufiyan Beg, Chairman, AMU Alumni Affairs Committee informed that his office will contact the selected students for the disbursement of the scholarship.

He said the scholarship is expected to significantly impact the recipients' lives by alleviating their financial burden of higher education.

Mr Afzal Usmani, Chairman, AAA-DC Scholarship Committee, said that the selection for this scholarship was made on the basis of the applicants’ demonstrable academic excellence and financial need, and the process involved assessment of academic transcripts, proof of financial need, and the personal statement of applicants outlining educational and career aspirations.

A dedicated committee of AAA-DC members, in collaboration with AMU teachers, conducted the selection while ensuring a fair and transparent evaluation of all applications, he added.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees, Mr. Tariq Farooqi, also expressed his gratitude to the AMU Alumni Affairs Committee, for its cooperation and assistance in carrying out the selection process.

Prof. Shafey Kidwai appointed New Dean at the Faculty of Social Science

ALIGARH June 25: Prof Shafey Kidwai, Department of Mass Communication, Aligarh Muslim University, and Director Sir Syed Academy, has been appointed Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, for a period from June 26, 2024 to April 7, 2025, the date of his superannuation.

A noted bilingual scholar and critic, columnist, a distinguished communication academician and translator, Prof Kidwai has received the highest literary award in the country, Sahitya Akademi Award for his enterprising work on Sir Syed in Urdu, "Sawanah-e-Sir Syed". He is the recipient of Kalinga Book Award, Madhya Pradesh Government's prestigious award for literature, Iqbal Samman and Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy's highest award for literary achievement, Amir Khusro Award.

His well-researched works on Sir Syed, including his bestseller book published by Routledge in 2020, "Sir Syed Ahmad Khan: Reason, Religion and Nation", have earned him the stature of a distinguished Sir Syed scholar. His other book, "Urdu Literature and Journalism: Critical Perspective" (Cambridge University Press, India, 2014) enumerates how Urdu journalism and literature resisted the alien rule and urged the countrymen to wage a relentless struggle against the subjugation.

He has published 12 books in English and Urdu including "Sawanah-e-Sir Syed", "Aligarh Institute Gazette: Ek Tajziyati Mutala", "Fiction Mutale'at", "Miraji", "Khabar Nigari", Michael Mdhusudan Dutt" and "R.K. Nrayan", etc. He also compiled and translated frequently used terms of mass communication in Urdu and prepared a style book for the ETV Urdu, Hyderabad.

His book reviews and columns regularly appear in The Hindustan TimesThe Indian ExpressThe HinduThe OutlookThe FrontlineThe Book Review and The Siyasat. His fortnightly column "Going Native" for the Friday Review of The Hindu, received wide appreciation from scholars in India and abroad.

He served Sahitya Akademi twice as a member of its General Council and was a member of the Urdu Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi for three terms. He was also the convener of the Bhasha Committee (Urdu) for the Saraswati Samman and Jnanpith Award. He was also a General Council Member of the National Council for the Promotion of the Urdu Language. He is the editorial board member of the reputed journal, Rozan-e-Rekhta and others, and contributes regularly to the literary journals of Urdu and English.

He has been teaching communication theories, cultural studies, broadcast journalism, and film studies since 1985. He was appointed Professor in 2005 and served as the Chairman of the Department of Mass Communication four times. Presently, he is heading the Sir Syed Academy as its Director since February 2024.

Prof. Rubi Anjum appointed New Chairperson of Community Medicine in Tibbiya College

 ALIGARH June 29: Prof. Rubi Anjum, Department of Tahaffuzi Wa Samaji Tib, Faculty of Unani Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University has been appointed as the Chairperson of the concerned department, for a period of three years, with effect from July 1, 2024.

Prof Anjum, engaged in teaching and research for over the last 16 years, has authored two books and published more than 70 research papers in the journals of national and international repute. Besides this, she has attended more than 70 national and international conferences and seminars and presented paper on myriad topics.

She received an Award of Appreciation at a World Health Day event held at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on April 3, 2016, for her role in creating awareness about diabetes.

AMU get improved ranks in India Today Best College Survey

 Engineering and Mass Communication studies at AMU get improved ranks in India Today Best College Survey

ALIGARH June 29: Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), Aligarh Muslim University has been ranked 22nd in the country among all engineering colleges by India Today Best Colleges of India Survey 2024, carried out in association with MDRA.

This year, the ZHCET has made a jump of two places higher than its 24th rank in 2023. It has obtained a Total Score (TS) of 1411.5 out of 2000 (an improved score from 1404.6 in 2023).

Similarly, the Department of Mass Communication has got an overall rank of 21 in the country (having jumped up two places compared to its 23rd rank in 2023). It has obtained TS of 1133.4 out of 2000 (with an improvement compared to its TS of 1123.2 in 2023).

The Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College succeeded in retaining its 17th position in the country which it got in 2023. It has obtained a score of 1451.7 out of 2000.

Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College and the Department of Architecture have also retained their respective positions of 8 and 9, with overall score of 1572 and 1397.4 out of 2000.

The Faculty of Law got an overall rank 14th in the country with TS of 1407.6, while the Department of Social Work has got an overall rank 14th with a score of 1342.6 out of 2000.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Naima Khatoon congratulated the university fraternity for the remarkable ranking results for the university departments and colleges.

She added, “The India Today’s Best Colleges’ rankings for AMU represent the excellent and extensive work of our faculty members, staff and students in advancing knowledge and discovery. These rankings are a testimony of their hard work and sincerity to taking the University to new heights”.

Prof. M. Salim Beg, Chairman, Committee for Ranking of the University, said that during the ranking of colleges, MDRA has carefully attuned 112+ attributes across each of the streams to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparison of colleges. These performance indicators were clubbed into 5 broad parameters, i.e. Intake Quality and Governance (IQG), Academic Excellence (ACE), Infrastructure and Living Experience (ILE), Personality and Leadership Development (PLD) and Career Progression and Placement (PCP).

In addition to above, Objective Score (OS) and Perception Score (PS) have also been separately calculated for each discipline of the respective college being considered, thus calculating a total score out of 2000 which is a pointer to the overall rank, he added.

Twelve AMU Unani medicine students selected by CCRUM

ALIGARH July 1: Twelve students from the Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University have been selected for the post of Research Officer at the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), which is an apex body of research engaged in scientific research on applied and fundamental aspects of Unani medicineworking under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

Prof. Badrudduja Khan, Principal, AKTC, stated that among 32 selected candidates, 12 are from AKTC out of which, 6 students have completed their MD from the Department of Moalejat, one student from the Department of Ilmul Advia and other five students have completed their undergraduate graduation (BUMS) from AKTC.

The selected AKTC students include Dr. Amreen Zehra, Dr. Mohd. New Office Bearers of AMU Officers’ Association

Aligarh, July 2: Mr. Md. Arifuddin Ahmed (Joint Registrar), Ms. Saba Nasreen Bano (Assistant Librarian), and Mr. Arshad Mehmood (Assistant Director, Physical Education) have been elected unopposed as President, Vice President and General Secretary of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Officers’ Association respectively. The election took place in the General Body meeting of the Association which was held at the Conference Hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences, AMU.

Mr. Saad Hameed (TPO General), Dr. Asif Fareed Siddiqui (Deputy Librarian) and Dr. Sadaqat Ali (Assistant Finance Officer) have been elected as Joint Secretary-I, Joint Secretary-II and Treasurer respectively, while Mr. Abdul Jabbar (Workshop Superintendent), Mr. Malik Hayat Hashmi (System Programmer), Dr. Vertika Bansal (Assistant Librarian), Mr. M. Seraj Ahmad Quadri (Assistant Registrar), Mr. Shah Mohammad Haris (Assistant Registrar), Mr. Faisal Waris (Assistant Controller) and Mr. Daud Khan (Assistant Librarian) have been elected as Executive Members.
