Inaugural function held for the Social Work and Outreach Activities Club

 

ALIGARH November 6:  The Social Work and Outreach Activities Club of Women’s College, Aligarh Muslim University held an inaugural talk and launched its membership programme.

Highlighting the objectives of the club, Prof. Shadab Bano drew the critical distinction between charity and social work, and stressed that receiving an education gives us a responsibility to share its benefits with others. She urged the students to view social work as a civic duty.

Prof. Nazura Usmani emphasized the importance of the disability support committee and discussed strategies to foster inclusivity and increase the representation of differently-abled students on campus. She stressed the need for disability sensitization among the student body to build a more understanding and accessible environment for everyone.

Dr. Eisha Rahman announced the club’s committees and introduced the coordinators; Prof. Nazura Usmani and Prof. Shadab Bano as Main Coordinators; Dr. Arshi Shoaib and Dr. Shagufta Munir for Remedial Classes for Abdullah School students; Dr. Shagufta Niyaz and Dr. Mahjabeen for Disability Support; Dr. Arshia Shafqat, Dr. Fozia Waheed, and Dr. Eisha Rahman for Tuitions for Non-Teaching Staff’s children; Dr. Heena Parveen and Dr. Eisha Rahman for Adult Education for Fourth Grade Employees; and Dr. Fozia Waheed, Dr. Mohd. Firoz Ahamed, Dr. Mahjabeen and Dr. Masudullah Khan for the Locality Cleanliness Drive.

Prof. Shadab Bano and Dr. Eisha Rahman addressed the queries of the participants, providing clarity on the club's goals and activities. About 65 students registered themselves as the members of the club.

Dr. Mohd Firoz Ahamed concluded the event, encouraging students to join the club for bringing meaningful changes and making a positive impact on their community.

 

JMI significantly improves its rank in QS Asia University Rankings - 2025

 

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been ranked at 188th position in the  QS Asia University Rankings-2025 released by the London-based  QS  University  Rankings Agency, improving its position from 206 last year. Coveted QS Asia University Rankings -2025, biggest so far has featured 984 top  Asian universities.

 

JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam congratulated teachers, non-teaching staff and students for the achievement. They said it is a matter of great pride and satisfaction for the university. It reflects the hard work of teachers, non-teaching staff and students which is being recognized internationally.

 

JMI has been proactively participating in national and international rankings. JMI will continue its endeavours to improve its rankings further in coming years.

MU student gets All India rank 2 in UGC NET (JRF) examination

ALIGARH November 5: Tamkeen Fatima, currently pursuing M. Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering in the second year at the department of Computer Engineering, Z.H. College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University has qualified the UGC-NET (JRF) examination, 2024, with an All India rank 2 (99.9933 percentile) in her first attempt.

She completed her B.Tech. from AMU in 2023 with 9.703 CPI and has been a consistent recipient of merit scholarships from class X onwards, including UP STSE, University Merit Financial Award (AMU), and GATE scholarship.

During her B.Tech., Fatima participated in research internship programmes at ISRO, McMaster University, Toronto, Canada (Mitacs GRI), and The Fields Institute, Toronto, Canada (Fields Undergraduate Summer Research Programme). She has also published a research paper in ACM Conference Proceedings.

 Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif has appointed Prof. (Dr.) Saroj Kumar Mahananda as the Officiating Controller of Examinations and Dr. Ahteshamul Haque as Hony. Deputy Controller of Examinations of the university. Additionally, Prof. Saroj Kumar Mahananda will take on the role of Coordinator, and Dr. Ahteshamul Haque will act as Deputy Coordinator for the Ph.D. admissions for the academic year 2024-25, as well as oversee all admissions activities for the session 2025-26.

 

Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Officiating Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi expressed their best wishes, anticipating that their leadership will enhance the efficiency of the Office of the Controller of Examinations.

 

Prof. Mahananda, a multilingual writer, translator and critic, works at the Department of English, JMI.  His areas of interest include Dalit Studies, Folk Studies, Indian Writing in English, Odia Literature, Translation and Aesthetics, 19th Century English Literature, Post Colonial Literature, Patrick White's Fiction and Aboriginal Literature. He has lectured and published widely on Dalit Studies, Folk Studies and Indian literature and aesthetics.

 

Dr. Ahteshamul Haque is working as Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, JMI. His area of research is Power Electronics and its application in Renewable Energy, drives, electric control system for artificial lighting, Power quality improvements, smart grids, wireless power transfer, electric vehicles,  electric traction, smart cities etc. Prior to JMI, he has worked in the Power Electronics R&D units of world’s reputed MNCs.

He has held various administrative positions, notably serving as the Honorary Assistant Controller of Examinations at the university from August 2015 to April 2020.

एनाटॉमी विभाग द्वारा एमबीबीएस छात्रों के लिए शव शपथ समारोह आयोजित

अलीगढ़, 4 नवंबरः अलीगढ़ मुस्लिम विश्वविद्यालय के जवाहर लाल नेहरू मेडिकल कॉलेज एवं अस्पताल (जेएनएमसीएच) ने 2024 में प्रवेश पाने वाले एमबीबीएस प्रथम वर्ष के छात्रों के लिए एक शव शपथ समारोह का आयोजन किया।

यह आयोजन महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यह छात्रों की चिकित्सा शिक्षा की शुरुआत का प्रतीक हैजो कि बुनियादी पाठ्यक्रम से सीखने के अधिक व्यावहारिक चरण में परिवर्तित हो रहा है।

शपथ एक औपचारिक प्रतिबद्धता का प्रतीक है जो छात्रों के प्रारंभिक रोगियों और शिक्षकों के रूप में दोहरी भूमिका निभाने वाले शवों के साथ काम करते समय सम्मान और व्यावसायिकता के महत्व पर जोर देती हैजिससे छात्रों के लिए अपने अध्ययन को श्रद्धा और नैतिक अखंडता के साथ करना आवश्यक हो जाता है।

एनाटॉमी विभाग के अध्यक्ष प्रोफेसर फजल उर रहमान ने कहा कि मृत व्यक्ति कभी जीवित व्यक्ति होते थेजिन्होंने निस्वार्थ भाव से चिकित्सा शिक्षा की उन्नति के लिए अपने शरीर को दान करने का फैसला किया थाइसलिए दानदाताओं के साथ गरिमा और सम्मान के साथ व्यवहार किया जाना चाहिए।

प्रोफेसर ऐजाज ए खानप्रोफेसर फरहा गौस और प्रोफेसर सलाउद्दीन अंसारी ने भी छात्रों से बातचीत की। शव शपथ समारोह के दौरान प्रोफेसर फरहान किरमानीडॉ दांवर हुसैनडॉ नीमाडॉ इमरान और डॉ अरशद भी उपस्थित थे।

कार्यक्रम का संचालन डॉ. मिदहत ने कियाजबकि डॉ. सना ने धन्यवाद ज्ञापन किया।

One-day Seminar held on recent advances in criminal law

ALIGARH November 4: The Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University organized a one-day national seminar on "Recent Advances in Criminal Law".

Justice Mr A.N. Mittal was the Chief Guest while Justice Mr Ifaqat Ali Khan attended the programme as the guest of honour.

In his opening remarks, Prof. M.Z.M. Nomani, Dean, Faculty of Law, welcomed the guest speakers and explored the theme around the decolonization in Indian legal frameworks. He stressed the need to examine if recent reforms genuinely uphold the principles of justice. He emphasized the need for a balance between innovation and established jurisprudential norms.

The other speakers included Dr. Faisal Fasih, NUJS, Kolkata, Prof Humayun Rasheed Khan, HJS, National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan, NUJS, Kolkata and Adv. Kauser Hussain, Supreme Court of India, New Delhi.

The Organizing Secretary, Dr Rabab Khan outlined the seminar’s objectives, emphasizing the importance of effective criminal laws in maintaining public safety and promoting national progress. She said that the seminar explored critical developments in criminal law and their societal impact.

Industrial Chemistry students visit CIPET, Dehradun

ALIGARH October 30: The fifth-semester B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry and B.Voc. Polymer and Coating Technology students of the Department of Industrial Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University visited the Central Institute of Petrochemical Engineering and Technology (CIPET) under the Centre for Skilling and Technical Support (CSTS), Dehradun and got an opportunity to know closely various kinds of polymer processing machines, including their principles, processes, and troubleshooting techniques for locating the defects and other manufacturing issues.

The students gained insights into quality control procedures and observed practical demonstrations of quality control instruments in the NABL and BIS accredited laboratory at CIPET. They also explored the Processing, Quality Control, Testing and Production departments to understand the use of various instruments and processes.

The visit was facilitated and guided by faculty members Dr. Rizwan Hussain, Dr. Mohd Shuaib Akhtar and Dr. Rakshanda Rehman, who provided valuable insights and support throughout the educational excursion.

Dr. Shahab Ali Asghar Nami, Chairman, Department of Industrial Chemistry, congratulated the students on the successful completion of the visit and emphasized the department's commitment to keep providing them with hands-on learning.

Dr. Mohammad Zain Khan, Training and Placement Officer of the department, appreciated the educational endeavour, underscoring its significance in enhancing practical learning experience.

JMI celebrates 104th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm, range of vibrant events organised

 

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) proudly celebrated its 104th Foundation Day today with vibrant event attended by the newly appointed Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif, Chief Guest Dr. Ashok Seth (Padma Bhushan), Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi, teachers, students, non-teaching staff of the university and other members of Jamia fraternity.

 

The Foundation Day function today started with a Guard of Honour to the Vice Chancellor and the Chief Guest by the NCC cadets of the university at the forecourt of Dr. M.A. Ansari Auditorium.  Guard of Honour was followed by unfurling of Jamia Flag by them and singing of Jamia Ka Parcham song by the music team of the university.

 

Singing of Jamia Ka Parcham song was followed by programmes inside Dr. M.A. Ansari Auditorium. The Tarana Team of the university mesmerized the gathering as they sang Jamia Tarana (Jamia Anthem), Jamia Raqs Kuna and other songs. Prof. Seemi Farhat Basir, DSW, formally welcomed the guests and gave a detailed overview of the university.

 

Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif who is an expert in Persian language started his first address inside the Ansari auditorium with a couplet which was welcomed with thunderous applause. He stressed that JMI was set up with an objective to provide Nai Taleem and the university has very well achieved its objective so far. He highlighted the role and sacrifices of legendary founders of JMI in establishing and nurturing the historical institution. He vowed to take the university to greater heights with the help of teachers, non-teaching staff and students of the university.

 

Stressing upon the purpose of education the Vice Chancellor said that it has three components; taleem (education)il(knowledge) and tehzeeb (manners) and without tehzeeb we can’t achieve our goals and there is very thin difference  between ilm and taleem, which he explained through an example. He also said that discipline is very necessary to achieve success in life.

 

Chief Guest, Dr Ashok Seth in his emotional address said that he is here not just as an expert cardiologist but also as an alumnus of the university as he is a recipient of honorary doctorate degree from JMI. He praised the University for producing a large number of people who have contributed immensely in nation building. He stressed on character building for being successful in life.  Programme inside the auditorium ended with singing of the National Anthem and vote of thanks by Officiating Registrar Mr. M. Nasim Haider.  

 

After the programmes in the auditorium were over the Vice Chancellor, inaugurated an exhibition titled “Making of Jamia Millia Islamia: Life and Works of Dr. Zakir Husain” organized by Dr. Zakir Husain Library. The inauguration took place in the esteemed presence of university Deans, Heads, Directors, the Proctor, and the Provost. The exhibition highlights the formative years of the university, the challenges it faced amid financial and political crises, and the role of Dr. Zakir Husain’s visionary leadership in preventing its closure. Additionally, the exhibition delves into various facets of                     Dr. Husain’s life, including his tenures as Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Governor of Bihar, Vice President, and later, President of India. Through a pictorial narrative, the exhibition also showcases rare books, newspaper clippings, and private papers from the benefactors of Jamia.

 

Later, Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif also inaugurated an impressive Science Exhibition showcasing the innovative spirit and creativity of students of Syed Abid Husain Senior Secondary School, JMI. The Vice Chancellor commended the school’s dedication to fostering a passion for science and learning. Several cultural programmes were organized at the multipurpose hall of Jamia Senior Secondary School where students of all the five schools of JMI presented their performances. Jamia Hamdard Vice Chancellor Prof. Afshar Alam was the Chief Guest of the event.

 

The Vice Chancellor also inaugurated an International Light Art Exhibition titled 'Ek Diya Dil Se' organised by Faculty of Fine Arts at M.F. Hussain Arts Gallery. The exhibition is an effort to celebrate the light within us which inspires the world to be a a better and more awakened place.

 

A number of other events that included academic and cultural activities were organized in different departments and centres of the varsity as part of the 104th Foundation Day. The three-day celebration of the Foundation Day began on 27th October and culminated today with the lowering of the Jamia Flag and singing of the National Anthem.  The university wore a festive look during the celebration and all the important buildings & gates were illuminated with lights.

Breast cancer awareness programme held

ALIGARH October 26: The Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC), Jawan (working under the Department of Community Medicine, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University) organized a breast cancer awareness programme, marking the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, under the supervision of Prof. Uzma Eram (Member-in-Charge, RHTC).

The PG students Dr. Mohammad Bilal and Dr. Chandramouli Mitra, along with the interns Naureen, Naushin and Mohammad Shayan staged an informative skit on the theme, “No one should face breast cancer alone”.

Prof. Saira Mehnaz, Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine highlighted the importance of early detection of breast cancer for its proper management and increasing the life expectancy of the patient.

Prof. M. Athar Ansari urged the villagers to regularly conduct a self-examination to prevent the breast cancer reaching the last stage.

Dr. Tabassum Nawab briefed about the signs and symptoms and risk factors related to breast cancer, while Dr. Chandramouli Mitra (JR-1) demonstrated the breast self-examination.

A breast cancer survivor, Mrs. Bimlesh, a resident of Jawan was felicitated by Prof. Saira Mehnaz. She shared her experience of early diagnosis and management of the disease.

Prof. Uzma Eram extended a vote of thanks.

Health Professions Educators Life

 

JMI hosts National Faculty Development Programme for Health Professions Educators on ‘Competency Based Teaching-Learning & Assessment Methodologies’.

 

Highlighting the importance of constant learning in an educators life and the growing competition in the world of healthcare professionals, the Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), hosted a two-day National Faculty Development Programme for Health Professions Educators on ‘Competency Based Teaching-Learning & Assessment Methodologies’ on 22nd and 23rd October 2024, bringing together the educators from different walks of healthcare for the betterment of the education imparted to the next generation of professionals. The program was aimed to equip the health professionals with the latest competency-based teaching and assessment methodologies aligned with the rapid changes in the education of health professionals as per the National Education Policy, 2020 and focused on bridging the gap between didactic teaching and competency-based curriculum, empowering educators with means to foster an environment of curiosity, innovation, and lifelong learning, preparing students to excel as future health professionals.

 

The programme saw an enthusiastic participation of 36 professionals comprising of senior and junior faculty members from the fields of dentistry, medicine, physiotherapy, and nursing. The event commenced with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an followed by welcome address by the Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, Prof. Keya Sircar, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the guests and delegates for making time for the event and apprised them about the glorious history of JMI, academic excellence and ranking of the Faculty of Dentistry and its contribution to the society.

 

This was followed by an insightful inaugural note by the Guest of Honour, Dr. Vedprakash Mishra, a stalwart of medical education, Dr. B. C. Roy National Awardee, Pro-Chancellor and Chief Advisor of Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research, Wardha. In his note titled, ‘Globalization of Indian Health Professions Education – A Way Forward’, Sir’s encyclopaedic description of the evolution of education policies in India motivated the audience to adopt transformational model of education. He also underscored the lacunae in the training of healthcare educators, reiterating the fact that educators don't need to be the sage on the stage, but the guide on the side. His address resonated deeply when he quoted the Kothari Commission stating that ‘The destiny of a nation is shaped in its classrooms’.

 

Following the talk, Honourable Vice-Chancellor of JMI, Prof. Mohammad Shakeel lauded Guest of Honour’s oratory and expressed his wish that such an in-depth description needs to be captured for posterity. Commending the Faculty of Dentistry’s commitment to professional development in health professions education, he emphasised on the dangers of fossilisation in this arena and the importance of regular Faculty Development Programmes to ensure that the educators remain updated with the latest teaching methodologies in the field. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof Anuradha Sharma followed by the rendition of the Indian National Anthem.

 

Over the two days, the programme featured insightful lectures and interactive discussions and activities conducted by eminent educators, Prof. Poonam Sood Loomba, Director-Professor and Head and Convenor, NMC Regional Center Medical Education Unit, MAMC, New Delhi and Prof. Pushpanjali Krishnappa, Chair-Health Professions Education Unit, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka. Various arms of teaching-learning such as attitudinal domain, principles of interactive learning for large and small groups, challenges of implementing competency-based education, addressing ethical conundrums and enhancing communication skills, and their application in health professions education were addressed through role plays and group discussions. A special focus was given to the integration of innovative teaching-learning methods and the design of outcome-based assessments to enhance a student’s learning experiences. The event concluded with a valedictory session, acknowledging the contributions of the resource faculty members, organizing team, and volunteers, and the participation of the delegates.

 

The two day event was received well by the participants which was evident by the  responses evoked by the feedback form shared with the participants at end of the programme. The faculty development programme was efficiently coordinated by Prof. Eram Perwez, Prof. Anuradha Sharma, and the team comprising of Prof. Shabina Sachdeva, Prof. Rizwana Mallick, Prof. Anupriya Wadhwa, and Prof. Nupur Gupta.

            e-Poster competition held to mark the Wold Suicide Prevention Day

ALIGARH October 25: Dr Anjali of University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), New Delhi won the first prize in an e-poster competition, organized by the Department of Psychiatry, J.N. Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University, to mark the World Suicide Prevention Day.

Dr Sabahat Tazeen Post Graduate student in the Department of Anaesthesiology and critical care at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH), AMU and Ms Anushka Agarwal from Government Medical College Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Telangana jointly got the second prize, while Mr Takochar, Smt. Nathiba Hargovandas Lakhmichand Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad won the third prize.

Dr Mohd Reyazuddin, Chairman, Department of Psychiatry said that several entries were received from all over India and the winning posters were selected by a three-member judges’ panel constituting of a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist and a psychiatric social worker.

 

Prof. Mazhar Asif joined as its 16th Vice Chancellor JMI

 

                     Professor Mazhar Asif joined Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) as its 16th Vice Chancellor



He was warmly welcomed by teachers and non-teaching staff of the university at the Vice Chancellor’s Office premises.

He is the first Vice Chancellor of JMI who visited his mausoleum immediately after joining. Brigadier Usman, also known as "Lion of Naushera (Naushera Ka Sher)" was a high-ranking officer in the Indian Army who died in the 1947-48 Indo-Pakistan war.

Professor Mazhar Asif joined Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) as its 16th Vice Chancellor today. He was warmly welcomed by teachers and non-teaching staff of the university at the Vice Chancellor’s Office premises. Immediately after the joining he visited Brigadier Usman’s mausoleum situated on the university campus and paid homage to him. 

 

Professor Asif also paid floral tribute to former President of India Dr. Zakir Husain and JMI’s founding member Dr M.A Ansari at their mausoleums situated on the university campus.

 

The Vice Chancellor met with Deans, Officiating Registrar and other senior officials of the university at the meeting hall of the Vice Chancellor’s office. He also took a round of various offices situated in the administrative block and met with the non-teaching staff.

 

The Vice Chancellor started his address to the gathering by saying that there is only one motto and one goal and that is…how to take this university to the highest position. He stressed that he is a student and employee centric person, “It is our responsibility to provide good accommodation, food, safety and security to students of the university. With the support of you people we will do this and try to take JMI to a higher level. We will get the help of Almighty Allah also if we will work together”, he said.

 

He further said “I always welcome criticism but also expect better suggestions and solutions, so come with the problem but also think about better alternatives and solutions so that together we can improve things”.

 

At the end of his address he said “From the core of my heart I thank you all, Jamia fraternity, the Government of India and all the friends”.

 

On 24th October, 2024, Hon'ble President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia, appointed Prof. Mazhar Asif from the School of Language Literature & Culture Studies, JNU, New Delhi as the Vice Chancellor of JMI. He has been appointed for a period of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.
