JMI VC flags off impressive march for Mental Health Awareness
The Department of Psychology, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) celebrated the world Mental Health Day on 10th October 2024. The celebrations started with the flagging off of the Mental Health Awareness March by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohammad Shakeel in the presence of Prof M Muslim Khan, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof Simi F Bashir, Dean, Students’ Welfare, Mr M. Naseem Haider, Registrar, Mr Shaikh Safiullah, Finance Officer and other officers & faculty members. The event was held in front of the administrative block keeping the theme of this year ‘Mental Health at Work’.
The Vice Chancellor while addressing the participants laid stress on the need to seek help when faced with mental health issues without any stigma or hesitation. The Vice Chancellor also announced that it has been decided to set up a Mental Health Unit in the Department of Psychology to cater to the needs of the students of JMI. He congratulated the Head, Prof Sheema Aleem, faculty members and students of the Department of Psychology for taking the timely initiative of holding the awareness activities on the campus and wished them all success. The March passed through all major faculties and institutions and culminated in the main campus where a street play highlighting the importance of seeking help was staged.
The students then participated in several fun filled interactive activities highlighting the theme of the day. A quiz competition on mental health issues, ‘Idraak’ was also held that elicited a lively participation. The day ended with a film screening to sensitise the participants about the importance of mental health awareness and actions that they could take to support and help others with mental health issues.
