JMI celebrates 73rd Republic Day amid jubilation over Padma Shri Award to Vice Chancellor

 

Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) Vice Chancellor Prof Najma Akhtar unfurled the National Flag at the forecourt of the Dr. M.A. Ansari Auditorium of the university as part of the 73rd Republic Day celebrations today. Unfurling of the tricolour was followed by the singing of the National Anthem by the gathering. The Vice Chancellor was the Chief Guest of the function which was organised under strict Covid-19 guidelines.

 The program was attended by the Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Mehtab Alam, Prof. Nazim Husain Al-Jafri, Registrar and a limited number of teaching and non-teaching staff of the university considering the pandemic.  

 The gathering inside the auditorium gave a big round of applause to the Vice Chancellor for being awarded Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards of the country, for her distinguished services in the field of literature and education. 

Prof. Akhtar’s name figured in the list of Padma Awardees declared by the Government of India yesterday. Elated at the achievement she said “I am honoured and humbled on getting this recognition. I take this opportunity to thank the Government of India who have believed in me and bestowed upon me the responsibility of carrying the Padma Award,

which means I have to work harder and harder in future also. My thanks also go to my family, friends and colleagues who stood with me through the thick and thin. I also give the heartiest congratulations to my fellow recipients of this award too”. 

Prof. Mukul Kesawan of the History Department of the university mesmerised the gathering with his lecture titled ‘ A Subcontinental Republic’.

 Students of various schools of JMI performed cultural programs inside the auditorium. Through a dramatic representation of the Constituent Assembly, students explained the drafting of the Constitution of India. Little girls presented a fancy dress program dedicated to first female achievers of India to commemorate National Girl Child Day. Patriotic group songs and speech were other highlights of the event. Certificates to student achievers were presented by the Vice Chancellor and other senior officials of the university.   

 Congratulating the students and staff of the university on the occasion of the Republic Day she said “Our nation gives us the message of restraint, dignity, belongingness and humanism. Qualities like human friendship, benevolence, human love, generosity helps India make the whole world its own. Due to these qualities, our country is able to maintain its dignity at the world stage. We all have a responsibility to contribute to the independent development of the country and human community. Keep playing your important role. Human friendship and service to mankind is our culture. This culture and human spirit is the unique identity of the Jamia Millia Islamia”.  

 Prof. Akhtar further said that for the last two years, the whole world is battling the corona virus and various issues related to it. It has affected every aspect of human life.  But despite all the problems the university has achieved several milestones during this crisis period.  With our hard work and perseverance, we got A++ accreditation from NAAC, significantly improved our position in NIRF and other national and international rankings. Credit for this success goes to all employees, students and alumni of the university.  

 Program ended with a vote of thanks delivered by the Prof. Nazim Husain Al Jafri, Regsitar, JMI.
