“Landslide Risk and Earthquake-Hit Area”

 



“ViksitBharat@2047:Voice of Youth:” JMI organises Public Lecture on “Landslide Risk Assessment and Risk Assessed Land Use Plan in the Earthquake-Hit Area”

 

The Department of Geography, Faculty of Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a Public Lecture on “Landslide Risk Assessment and Risk Assessed Land Use Plan in the Earthquake-Hit Area” on 29th December,2023 as a part of “Viksit Bharat @2047 initiative”. The lecture was delivered by esteemed Professor Dinesh Pathak, an expert in the field of hydrogeological assessment from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. Prof. Tabrez Alam Khan, Dean Faculty of Sciences chaired the lecture.

 

Prof. Haroon Sajjad, Head Department of Geography, warmly welcomed the distinguished speaker, the Dean, faculty members, research scholars and the students. He introduced the speaker and elucidated the significance of the lecture as a part of Viksit Bharat Abhiyan. He praised the initiative taken by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi. The vision manifests transformation of youth ideas into sustainable development of India by 2047.

 

Prof. Dinesh Pathak emphasized landslide susceptibility, vulnerability, and risk mapping for preparing an effective land use plan. He shed light on comprehensive vulnerability assessment, incorporating social, physical, economic, and environmental parameters through an empirical approach and GIS modeling technique. He highlighted the potential severe implications on communities residing in high-risk areas and stressed the need for strategic land use planning.

 

Attendees were enlightened on the significance of monitoring temporal changes in land use maps for the preparation of disaster-sensitive land use plans. Such maps can help the authorities to take timely decisions to safeguard the communities.

 

Prof. Tabrez Alam Khan in his chair remarks enunciated the recent disasters occurring in different parts of India and suggested developing effective early warning systems for disasters. "We cannot stop disasters, these are bound to occur but we can reduce the impact", he said.

 

Dr. Asif who conducted the programme also presented the vote of thanks. He expressed gratitude towards Prof. Iqbal Hussain, Vice Chancellor, JMI for his support in hosting various events on “Viksit Bharat Abhiyan” vision 2047. He also thanked Prof. Pathak for his invaluable insights, Prof. Tabrez Alam for his valuable chair remarks, and all who participated in this important event.
