ASHA Organises Heritage Walk as Part of Sir Syed Day Celebrations
ALIGARH, October 10: The Aligarh Society of History and Archaeology (ASHA) organised a heritage walk for students as part of the ongoing Sir Syed Day celebrations at Aligarh Muslim University. The walk aimed to remind participants of the mission and endeavours of the University’s founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, and his vision in establishing an institution that has grown from a small college into a world-renowned centre of excellence.
The walk was led by Professor Syed Ali Nadeem Rezavi and Dr.Lubna Irfan, who both highlighted the secular principles and inclusive traditions nurtured by Sir Syed. They pointed out that the names of donors inscribed on stone tablets affixed to the doors of rooms and walls of early MAO College buildings, such as Strachey Hall and surrounding structures, reflect the founder’s secular spirit, as they include contributions from people of diverse faiths and social backgrounds.
Participants were also reminded that Sir Syed had envisioned a museum as part of his original plan for the campus to showcase India’s shared cultural heritage. The foundation of the Nizam Museum stands as testimony to this vision.
The walk commenced at Victoria Gate and covered significant heritage landmarks including Strachey Hall, Lytton Library, Nizam Museum, and the Jama Masjid, concluding at the Sir Syed Collection in the Musa Dakri Museum. More than 40 students and researchers took part in the event.
