JMI organises Bhasha Sangam: 1st National Multilingual Elocution Competition, 2023

                             


 IZHAAR- the Debating Society, Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) successfully organised “Bhasha Sangam: 1st National Multilingual Elocution Competition” in which students from different places around the country participated.  This competition was organized in 12 languages i.e., Hindi, English, Urdu, Bengali, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, English, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, and Gujarati on 4th May, 2023 and witnessed great response from participants. This was the first competition in the country where participants from 12 different languages competed on the same topic and on the same platform.

 

The competition was organized in two rounds; preliminary and final rounds. The preliminary round was online in which participants were required to send a video. 250 registrations were received in the preliminary round from more than 100 institutes of the country.  After the screening round top 66 participants qualified for finals held on 4th May 2023.

 

Singing of Jamia Tarana, screening of the video film on 100 years of excellence of JMI, recitation of verse of Holy Quran were part of the Inauguration Ceremony.   As the theme of the event was associated with India’s G-20 presidency, to signify the importance of the same two videos were played which manifested the importance of G-20 logo and its eternal meaning another showed that G-20 is not only of diplomats and bureaucrats but also each and every citizen and student are the most important pillar of the same. Then came the showstopper and an excellent example of India’s diversity. i.e., the cultural dance. The dance program consisted of the presentation of various state dances of India from Bharatanatyam in Tamil Nadu to Bumbro in Kashmir, to showcase the shared cultural heritage and to give the message that though we have different cultures there is a feeling of oneness among us. The participants were enthusiastic and enjoyed the performance with huge rounds of applause.

 

Thereafter, an introduction and felicitation ceremony was conducted wherein the esteemed panel of honorary guests comprising of Mr. K. Mahesh, IAS, Special Director, Union Territories Civil Services (Chief Guest), Dr. Neepa Choudhary, Under Secretary Branding Department, G-20 Secretariat( Guest of Honor), Prof. Najma Akhtar (Padma Shri), Vice Chancellor, JMI (Patron in Chief).

 

Prof. Dr. Eqbal Hussain, Dean, Faculty of Law, JMI highlighted the importance of the competition and the importance of the G20 Presidency.

 

JMI Vice Chancellor and Patron in Chief of the event Prof. Najma Akhtar was thrilled to see the performance and the way the awareness of the concept of diversity is being spread. She was also very glad to see the way the faculty of law came up with the idea of conducting the competition in 12 languages and taking the initiative of promoting regional languages which form the prominent pillar of any responsible institute. She also highlighted how JMI has contributed to the nation’s education system by producing successful alumni and imparting quality education to children in an affordable fee structure and mentioned how we are still on the same path of progression. Moreover, she also highlighted the importance of conducting this event to make abreast of the students of India’s G20 Presidency and the nuances of G20. She concluded by appreciating the efforts of the Faculty of Law and its continued commitment to the path of excellence.

 

Chief Guest Mr. K Mahesh in his address said that he was exhilarated to be on the Campus of JMI. He started his words of wisdom by mentioning the role JMI has played over the years in the development and growth of the nation. He appreciated and was amazed by the idea of conducting the elocution in 12 languages and that too on the theme of G-20 which is of prime importance not for the country but also each and every citizen.  He appreciated the idea of multilingual national-level competition which was conducted for the first time in India. He was elated to be invited to such an esteemed and renowned institution.

Guest of Honor for the Inauguration Ceremony Dr. Neepa Choudhary, Undersecretary of the G-20 Secretariat Branding Department, was amazed with the idea on which the competition was aligned and extended her gratitude to JMI on the behalf of whole G-20 secretariat to organize such a wonderful competition which is assisting the spreading of the essence of India’s G-20 presidency. She also gave regards and best wishes on behalf of the whole G-20 secretariat as the whole team of G-20 wished to be part of this event. She also highlighted the importance of understanding the true meaning of the G-20 presidency and added some very important dimensions to the discussion and also was very happy to be part of this event. The Inauguration ceremony was concluded with a vote of thanks by the Co-convener.

The Valedictory Ceremony commenced around 4:30 pm with the warm welcome of all the participants and the esteemed panel of dignitaries which included our Chief Guest Dr. Sanjeev Chopra, Retd. IAS, Former Director, LBSNAA, Mussoorie, and Prof. Dr. Eqbal Hussain, Dean, Faculty of Law, JMI.

 

The Chief Guest, in his words of wisdom, mentioned the importance of regional language and the appreciation of the concept of this whole competition. He congratulated the Faculty of Law, JMI for organizing such an innovative competition. He also discussed the significance of India’s presidency and how this competition is aligned with the same.

 

He gave a speech highlighting the presidency of India, and its role in international affairs and also interacted with the participants regarding U.P.S.C preparations. He concluded by motivating the participants. Thereafter the closing remarks were given by Prof. Eqbal Hussain, Dean, Faculty of Law, JMI.

 

All the Winners and Runners-up of all the 12 languages were felicitated by the Dean, Faculty of Law, and Prof. Kahkashan Y. Daniyal with a Trophy and Certificate of Merit. Moreover, there was one prize for the Most Diverse Institution also (the criteria for which was the maximum finalists for different languages from any institute) was awarded to Law College Dehradun, by  Subject Advisor Dr. Faizanur Rahman. The event ended with a vote of thanks by Convenor Mr. Sudeep Krishna and singing of the National Anthem.

And Logeshwaram M., in Marathi- Pruthviraj Prakash Shinde and Mayur Devendra Shinde, in Punjabi- Manmohit Preet Kaur and Khusboo Verma, in Kashmiri- Syed Saheeta Noor and Saiq Jan, in English- Anjali Lal Joseph and Maheen Faisal , in Malyalam- Arya Narayan MK and Alaknanda S Anil, in Urdu- Faizan Mushrif and Mohd. Nasir Anwar, Gujarati- Zainab Abbas and Monark Jain and in Bengali- Rudrajit S Thakur and Riya Dey were adjudged winner and runner-up respectively.
