JMI organises ICMR sponsored Workshop on “Correcting Facial Asymmetry”

 

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)  organized an ICMR sponsored two-day comprehensive Ortho-Surgical Hands-on Workshop on Correcting Facial Asymmetry on 3rd and 4th May 2023. The workshop was organized with the intent to train surgeons and orthodontists to acquire the skills needed to treat complex cases of facial asymmetry. It required the surgeons and orthodontists to work in collaboration for comprehensive management of the case.

 

The first day of the workshop consisted of didactic lectures from stalwarts like Dr. Dhirendra Srivastava former Dean ESIC New Delhi, Dr.Tulika Tripathi, Senior Professor, MAIDS, Dr. Sherry Peter from Kochi, Dr. Dinesh Kadam, Plastic Surgeon from Mangalore, and Dr. Harpreet Singh from ESIC Dental College Delhi. Dr. Andrew Heggie who is a clinical professor and senior oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne presented an online lecture on congenital asymmetry.

 

The second day consisted of two hands-on workshops. One hands-on workshop, which was exclusively for faculty, was on stereolithographic models and involved a team of oral maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists to execute the steps involved in the management of a case of asymmetry. The resource persons for this course were Dr.AnantanarayananDr.Ratna Padmanabhan, and Dr. Balaji from Meenakshi Ammal Dental College, Dr. Elavenil from SRM Dental College, Chennai, and Dr. Neha Katta from Jaipur. The second course was on 3-D virtual surgical planning of a case of facial asymmetry on Materialise Proplan software which is a contemporary approach to planning a facial asymmetry case. This hands-on course was conducted by Dr.Dipesh Rao and Dr.Arvind Sivakumar from Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, Bangalore.

  

The workshop was inaugurated by JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar (Padma Shri)  who was the Chief Guest of the event. Prof. Akhtar said that JMI has always been in forefront of academic and research activities thus achieving NAAC A++ accreditation and is currently ranked 3rd among the central universities in NIRF. Dr. Keya Sircar, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry highlighted the relevance of the topic and the need for such interdisciplinary training workshops.

 

The inauguration was also graced by Dr. Ritu Duggal Chief CDER AIIMS, Dr. Sanjay Labh, Secretary, Indian Orthodontic Society, and Dr. Ashish Gupta President AOMSI Delhi-NCR state chapter. Around 150 doctors from 35instututes, belonging to major tertiary health care centres of India like Maulana Azad Medical College, AIIMS, Safdarjung hospital, ESIC hospital, PGI Rohtak, GDC Mumbai, GDC Jammu, GDC Kottayam, AIIMS Jodhpur, GDC Aurangabad, AMU, BHU etc. participated in this workshop.

 

Dr. Panchali Batra, Professor Orthodontics and organizing secretary of the workshop thanked ICMR and her university for all the support, and stressed on the fact that collaborative work is the key to holistic treatment of challenging cases.

 
Dr. Deborah Sybil, Professor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and convenor of the workshop said that this kind of high-end training workshops are very rare in India and should be encouraged by teaching institutes. 
 

A conference book titled “Comprehensive management of Facial Asymmetry” was also launched during the inauguration by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar and Dean, Faculty of Dentistry Dr.Keya Sircar. The book had contributions from 17 institutes across India.
