AMU Faculty Member Presents Clinical Study on Antimicrobial Resistance at National Conference
ALIGARH, July 11: Prof. Mohd. Aslam, In-charge, Nephrology Section, Department of Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, presented a clinical study on antimicrobial resistance in complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) at the 14th Best of Brussels Conference held at JW Marriott, Pune.
In his presentation, Prof. Aslam highlighted the growing burden of recurrent and complicated UTIs in India and other developing countries, noting that delayed treatment with appropriate antibiotics can lead to significant mortality. Referring to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, he pointed out that resistance to carbapenem antibiotics among common UTI pathogens has reached 25–40 percent.
He also presented findings from a study conducted at JNMC, AMU between 2022 and 2024 involving 100 patients with complicated UTIs. The study revealed nearly 25 percent resistance to commonly used carbapenem antibiotics, underscoring the need for judicious antibiotic use and effective antimicrobial stewardship.
Prof. Aslam emphasized that antimicrobial resistance has emerged as a major global healthcare challenge and highlighted innovative strategies, including risk prediction tools, antimicrobial stewardship, antimicrobial peptides, and bacteriophage therapy, as promising approaches to address the growing threat.
Prof. Khawaja Saifullah Zafar, Chairperson, Department of Medicine, congratulated Prof. Aslam on presenting the University's research at a national forum and for drawing attention to the challenges of antimicrobial resistance and the need for improved management strategies.
