Aligarh’s Scholar Who Gave Islamic Studies a Modern Voice!!! Professor Akhtarul
Wasey (born 1951 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh) is one of India’s most respected
voices in Islamic studies, minority rights, and interfaith dialogue. A proud
alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University, he earned multiple degrees there—B.A.
(1971), B.Th. (1975), M.Th. (1976), and M.A. (1977)—before expanding his horizons
with a Diploma in Turkish Language from Istanbul University (1983).
Career Highlights:
- Served for over three
decades at Jamia Millia Islamia, eventually becoming Professor Emeritus of
Islamic Studies.
- Appointed National
Commissioner for Linguistic Minorities, a constitutional role advocating for
India’s diverse voices.
- Currently President
(Vice Chancellor) of Maulana Azad University, Jodhpur, guiding its academic and
cultural mission.
- Authored and edited
over 37 books on Islam, mysticism, and contemporary Muslim issues.
- Honored with the
Padma Shri (2013) and Fulbright Fellowship (2008), reflecting national and
international recognition.
