Prof Vibha Sharma being felicitated by the MANUU VC Prof Syed Ainul Has

AMU Professor Calls for Transformative Urdu Textbooks under NEP 2020 at MANUU WORKSHOP

Prof Vibha Sharma of the Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), underscored the need for a transformative academic vision for Urdu textbooks in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 while addressing a two-day National Workshop for Urdu Authors at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad.

Delivering the inaugural address as Chief Guest, Prof Sharma emphasised that Urdu textbooks at the higher education level must go beyond linguistic preservation to embody intellectual innovation, interdisciplinarity and contemporary relevance. She said textbooks should function as dynamic pedagogical tools that foster experiential and inquiry-based learning, integrating analytical frameworks, research perspectives and interactive components suited to present-day academic and professional needs.

Calling for a shift from conventional templates and translated material, she advocated conceptually designed textbooks that cultivate critical thinking, creativity and contextual understanding. She also urged educators to view the syllabus as an intellectual roadmap rather than a restrictive checklist.

Highlighting the growing presence of Artificial Intelligence in higher education, Prof Sharma stressed the need for its critical academic engagement, suggesting that modern Urdu textbooks should address digital transformation and AI from epistemological and ethical perspectives.

The workshop was presided over by MANUU Vice-Chancellor Prof Syed Ainul Hasan. In an online address, Dr Chandan Srivastava, Academic Coordinator, Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, informed participants that the Government of India has earmarked ₹6,000 crore in the forthcoming financial year for developing higher education textbooks in Indian languages, including Urdu, with a focus on interactive e-textbooks.
