JMI & MCD jointly organises Awareness Program on ‘Prevention and Control of Vector Borne Diseases’

 

The Sanitation Unit (SU), Office of the Registrar, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in collaboration with Public Health Department, Central Zone, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) organized a programme on ‘Prevention and Control of Vector Borne Diseases’ on at the FTK CIT Hall of the university.

The event was attended by Sh. Amit Kumar Sharma (IRS), Deputy Commissioner (MCD), Dr. N. R. Tuli, Deputy Health Officer (MCD), Dr. Himmat Singh, Scientist (E), National Institute of Malaria Research, Dr. A. K. Rawat, Additional Municipal Health Officer (MCD), a large number of academicians, policymakers, administrative and sanitation staff members, NGOs, representative of nearby Hospitals, Schools, Masjid, Mandir, Church, Gurdwara, Police station etc. Prof. Tokeer Ahmad (Nodal Officer, SU, JMI) and Dr. Ayub Khan, Sanitary Inspector, JMI coordinated the event.

Prof. Nazim Husain Jafri, Registrar, JMI graced the event by sending his best wishes, cooperation and commitment to take the strict measures to keep the campus disease free.

In his address, Dr. Tuli thanked the JMI for collaborating with the MCD on an issue of immense importance for public health. He in his brief address, he outlined the need for community participation in addressing the problem of controlling vector borne diseases.

In the presentation, Dr. Himmat Singh, Scientist (E) provided an overview of the evolution of vector borne diseases and their spread. Delineating between various types of mosquitoes, their breeding and behavioural patterns, he outlined the need for community participation in controlling vector borne diseases.

Sh. Amit Kumar Sharma in his address outlined the initiatives that have been started in the Central Zone under the leadership of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, National Capital Territory of Delhi such as controlling waste disposal at source, composting, establishing machines under CSR for plastic disposal and disposal of e-waste. He also talked at length about the organizational aspects of tackling the problems of vector borne diseases.

Sh. Sharma lauded the JMI in its sanitary efforts and requested the JMI to provide the MCD with some space where it can establish a machine for plastic disposal and collection of e-waste. He also asked the JMI to actively collaborate with MCD so that it can be declared a zero-waste university. In his concluding remarks, Sh. Sharma administered an oath to all present not to use plastic in daily life.

The programme ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Prof. Tokeer Ahmad.
