The Games & Sports Department, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in collaboration with the Zurkhanh Sports & Kushti Federation (India), organized the 5th World Cup Zurkhanesh Sports & Koshiti Pahlavani Championship from the 23rd to the 24th of December, 2025, at the Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Sports Complex, JMI. This prestigious international event witnessed the participation of nearly 130 athletes from seven countries, namely, Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Uganda, Tanzania, and India.
Mr. Waseem Khan, a student of B.A. (Hons.) Hindi 1st Year and a seasoned wrestling player of JMI, participated in the championship and won a silver medal (80 kg weight category).
Further, the following wrestlers of India won medals in the championship:
1. Mr. Aniket Sharma – 60 kg Category – Gold Medal
2. Mr. Parshant Kumar – 70 kg Category – Gold Medal
3. Mr. Washim Khan – 80 kg Category – Silver Medal
4. Mr. Sumit Kumar – 90 kg Category – Bronze Medal
In Koshti Pahlavani, the following emerged as rank holders:
1st Iran
2nd India
3rd Azerbaijan
In the Overall Championship, the rank order stood as
1st Iran
2nd Iraq
3rd Azerbaijan
Prof. Mazhar Asif, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, JMI, appreciated the sincere efforts of the organizing committee for their hard work in putting together the globally reputed championship at Jamia Millia Islamia. Prof. Asif congratulated all the medallists and participants from the various nations who travelled all the way to India and JMI to participate in the reputed event and extended his best wishes for their future tournaments.
Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar, JMI, lauded the efforts of the organizers for their excellent execution of the grand international event and sent his best wishes to all the medallists of Zurkhanesh Sports & Koshiti Pahlavani and participants of the championship from all the participating countries.
Prof. Mohd. Mahfuzul Haque, Chairman, Games & Sports Committee, JMI, presented medals to the winners in the 'Closing & Prize Distribution Ceremony' and applauded the performances of the champions. He congratulated the athletes from the seven nations for their participation in this championship and praised all the medallists for their remarkable achievement. Prof. Haque also appreciated the organizing team of the Zurkhanh Sports & Kushti Federation (India) and the Games & Sports Department, JMI, for the successful conduct of the tournament.
Prof. Nafis Ahmad, Hony. Director, Games & Sports, JMI, who also joined the Closing & Prize Distribution Ceremony and awarded medals to the winners of the tournament, expressed sincere gratitude to the university administration for providing all necessary support during the conduct of the 5th World Cup Zurkhanesh Sports & Koshiti Pahlavani Championship at Jamia Millia Islamia. Prof. Nafis admired the efforts of all the competitors from various countries for their participation in the tournament and congratulated all the medallists and winners of the championship. He wished them luck in their future sports endeavors.
