JMI's CDOE holds lecture by Prof. Diana Fox, Bridgewater State University,Massachusetts, USA on 'Navigating Climate Emergency through Science Fiction'

Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) organized the first special lecture of 2026 in its series of invited lectures on “Navigating Climate Emergency through Science Fiction” by Prof. Diana Fox, Chair, Dept. Of Anthropology, Bridgewater State University, Massachusetts, USA, on March 9, 2026.

Given the urgency of climate change and the need to address its prospective recourses, the CDOE, JMI had invited Prof. Diana Fox to deliver a lecture on the theme of 'Climate Emergency through Science Fiction'.  Dr. Diana Fox is a cultural and applied anthropologist, scholar-activist and documentary film producer. Her work focuses on the Anglophone Caribbean, particularly Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, where she researches issues of gender and sexual diversity, women’s social movement activism for ecological sustainability, women's human rights and transnational feminisms and activism.

Prof. Fox extensively discussed the idea of anthropocenic dystopia and feminist Caribbean futurism in Diana McCaulay’s fiction Daylight Come in order to deliberate how literature, and of course, other forms of arts including music, painting among others could be impactful in addressing the issue of climate emergency. She also highlighted that the discourses of literature and arts should also positively influence the government policies addressing the issues of climate emergency. Prof. Fox concluded her lecture with an emphasis that the collective efforts of writers, artists, scientists and policy makers in tandem should be devoted to deal with urgency of climate change.

Following the lecture delivered to a packed-to-capacity conference room, an engaging round of questions and answers from academics across various disciplines, including History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology and Literature, followed. Prof. Moshahid Alam Rizvi, Dean, CDOE, himself a bio-scientist, an expert in Environmental Biology and Genetics, applauded Prof. Diana’s ideas, and opined that such ideas should be reified to fight against the issues of Climate Change. Prof. Rizvi also appreciated Dr. Mohd. Farhan, Lecture Series Coordinator for managing to invite Prof. Diana Fox for organizing her talk at the CDOE, JMI.
