 Dr. Saima Yunus Khan, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Dr. Z. A. Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), delivered an impactful lecture on “Early Childhood Caries – Prevention and Intervention” at the Indian Dental Association (IDA) Uttar Pradesh State event held at the Aligarh Club.

Addressing an audience of dental practitioners, postgraduate students and public health professionals, Dr. Saima highlighted the growing burden of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) in India. She noted that nearly 50 percent of children under six years of age are affected by ECC, often suffering from complications such as swelling, sinus formation, abscesses, pain and fever.

“These conditions not only cause discomfort but also keep children away from school, ultimately hampering their growth, nutrition, overall health and learning abilities,” she emphasized.

Dr. Saima also shared insights from her evidence-based Indian Caries Risk Assessment Tool, a framework she has developed and copyrighted under the Government of India. The tool aims to provide clinicians with a scientific method for evaluating risk factors early and implementing preventive strategies tailored to Indian children.

During the session, a team of postgraduate residents from the department Dr. Fasna, Dr. Himani, Dr. Anam and Dr. Elsy presented a series of talks focusing on preventive and minimally invasive protocols in pediatric dentistry. Their presentations covered a wide range of interventions, including Early risk identification and preventive strategies,Root canal therapy in primary teeth followed bytooth-colored restorative options and crowns,The clinical application of the Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) protocol,Rehabilitation of st and core techniques

The team also showcased full-mouth rehabilitation cases, demonstrating how timely intervention can significantly improve oral health outcomes in young children.
