AMU Surgeons Perform ZADC’s First Digitally Planned Facial Aesthetic Surgery Using 3D-Printed Titanium Prosthesis

ALIGARH, November 21: In a landmark achievement, doctors at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed Dental College and Hospital, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), have successfully performed the institution’s first digitally planned facial aesthetic surgery using 3D-printed titanium prosthesis and implants.

The breakthrough procedure was carried out on a 17-year-old patient, Khushi, who had been suffering from severe facial asymmetry due to childhood resorption of a segment of the lower jaw on the left side. The deformity had caused significant functional challenges, including difficulty in chewing and speaking, and had also resulted in a noticeable tilt of the upper jaw.

The surgery was performed by a collaborative team led by Dr. Tabishur Rahman and Dr. M. Kalim Ansari from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, along with Prof. Sandhya Maheshwari from the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics. Prior to the operation, initial orthodontic alignment was completed by Dr. Iman.

The operating team included consultants Dr. Md. Kalim Ansari, Dr. Md. Danish, and Dr. Aafiya Ambereen, as well as senior and junior residents Dr. Anupriya, Dr. Iffat Khan, Dr. Usman Khan, Dr. Roshni, and Dr. Pooja Nakum. The affected jaw structures were digitally planned, reconstructed, and repositioned using customised 3D-printed titanium prosthesis and plates. A team of anaesthetists led by Dr. Ambar Khan ensured safe general anaesthesia throughout the procedure.

Dr. Sajjad Abdur Rahman, Chairperson of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Verma, Chairperson of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, congratulated the team on this significant achievement.

Patient Khushi expressed her happiness, stating that the surgery has restored her lost confidence, while her family appreciated the successful outcome. She will undergo the recommended second phase of orthodontic realignment under the supervision of the orthodontic team.

The successful completion of this digitally guided reconstructive procedure marks an important advancement in maxillofacial surgical capabilities at AMU and underscores the growing adoption of cutting-edge technologies at Ziauddin Ahmed Dental College and Hospital.
