             AMU Units Mark Hindi Diwas with Cultural, Literary                                                                                                                                   and  reative Activities

ALIGARH, September 15: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) observed Hindi Diwas on September 14 with a series of cultural, literary and creative activities organised by different University units, highlighting the importance of Hindi as a language of cultural expression, social connection and everyday communication. The programmes also stressed the need to respect linguistic diversity while encouraging greater use of Hindi in education, work and public life.

At Begum Azizun Nisa Hall, a series of Inter-Hall competitions was organised under the guidance of Hall Provost Prof. Asiya Sultana. The competitions included Impromptu Speech, Advertisement Acting and Short Play, providing students a platform to express their creativity and ideas in Hindi.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Asiya Sultana highlighted the importance of Hindi as a medium of culture, sensitivity and expression and encouraged students to develop greater interest in the language and use it more extensively in their creative expression.

In the Impromptu Speech Competition, Farhana secured the first position, followed by Shaista Rahman and Umme Salma in second and third positions, respectively, while Shagufta and Alpana received consolation prizes. In the Advertisement Acting Competition, Shaista Rahman stood first, Alpana second and Fariya Shakeel third, with Ariba Aqeel receiving a consolation prize. Team Akshardhara won the Short Play Competition with “Main Hindi Hoon: Ek Lekhak Ki Kalam Ka Sangharsh”, followed by Team Shaista Rahman with “Baraatiyon Ka Swagat Kaun Karega?” and Team Alpana with “Mantra Kahani”.

The jury comprised Dr Juhi Gupta, Advanced Centre for Women’s Studies and Assistant Dean, Students’ Welfare, AMU, and Dr Shagufta Niyaz, Women’s College, AMU. The performances were assessed on content, presentation, creativity, language and expression.

Hall Warden Dr Afsana, Dr Mujahid, Dr Musheer, Dr Iram and Dr Yasmeen attended the programme along with a large number of students. Dr Jyoti Kusumbal proposed the vote of thanks. PhD scholars Asiya Amreen, Shaista Rahman and Salma contributed to the organisation of the programme.

At the National Service Scheme (NSS), a seminar on Hindi Diwas brought together students, teachers and guests to discuss the contemporary relevance of Hindi. Presiding over the programme, Prof. Nasreen, Department of Education, said that Hindi should be loved and respected as one’s mother tongue, while emphasising that respect for Hindi should go hand in hand with respect for other languages. She said language connects hearts and promotes mutual understanding among societies and cultures. She also stressed the need to link Hindi with employment, technology and emerging opportunities along with education.

Chief Guest Dr. Mohammad Faiyazuddin, Principal, Raja Mahendra Pratap City School, said Hindi Diwas should not remain confined to remembering the language for a single day. He emphasised that its real significance lies in adopting Hindi in everyday life, education and work.

Special Guest Mazhar-ul-Qamar, Gymnasium Instructor, appreciated the NSS initiative and said that NSS members were actively contributing to social awareness and nation-building activities. He observed that programmes of this nature connect language, culture and national unity. He also referred to efforts to promote Hindi in education, administration and other areas and stressed that respect for the language should be reflected in its conscious use in daily life and work.

The programme was conducted by NSS Programme Officer Dr. Nahid Akbari, who emphasised the responsibility of NSS in fostering among young people a sense of language, culture and social responsibility. NSS Coordinator Dr. Mohammad Mohsin Khan welcomed the guests with bouquets and shawls and appreciated Dr. Nahid Akbari’s role in organising and conducting the programme, as well as the active participation of the students.

As part of the Hindi Diwas observance, the guests jointly planted a guava sapling, linking the celebration with a message of environmental conservation. Hundreds of NSS participants attended the programme along with Mohd Naeem, Md Imran Khan, Dr. Aftab Ahmad Ansari and other educationists. The programme concluded with the AMU Tarana and the National Anthem.

At AMU ABK High School (Girls), Hindi Diwas was marked with a special staff meeting involving teachers of the primary and senior sections. Coordinator Dr. Farhat Parveen conducted the programme and highlighted Hindi as not only a medium of communication but also an expression of cultural heritage, emotions and social bonding.

Vice Principal Dr. Saba Hasan emphasised the importance of Hindi in Indian culture and social life and called for its greater use beyond classrooms, particularly in office work and daily life. She stressed the need for collective efforts to promote, preserve and enrich the language.

Hindi teachers Mohammad Arshad Khan and Ms. Shakeela also spoke on the richness, relevance and utility of Hindi. Mohammad Arshad Khan announced that the school would organise Hindi Pakhwada from September 16 to 26, featuring activities such as poetry recitation, newspaper reading, poster-making and essay writing to encourage students’ creativity, language skills and interest in Hindi.

Adding a literary touch to the programme, Commerce teacher Mehtab presented an original Hindi poem, which was warmly appreciated by the teachers. Ms. Simmi Shahid and Ms. Rizwana Khatoon looked after media and related arrangements, while Ms. Shakeela proposed the vote of thanks.

At Abdullah School, AMU, Hindi Diwas was observed with poster- and slogan-making activities for students of Classes III to V on the themes “Hindi HamariPehchan Hai” and “Meri Pyari Hindi Bhasha”. The students used Hindi handwriting, colours and short slogans to express their appreciation for the language.

A special assembly was also organised, featuring speeches and poems by students on Hindi as a mother tongue and an important part of their identity. Superintendent Mrs. Umra Zaheer, in her address, encouraged the students to take pride in Hindi and use it with respect in speaking and writing. She also stressed the importance of preserving the country’s rich culture and heritage and appreciated the creativity and efforts of the students.
