ALIGARH, September 9: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) continued its campus-wide environmental initiatives under the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, with the Department of Applied Mathematics, Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), and S.H. Senior Secondary School (Boys) organising plantation drives.
The Department of Applied Mathematics organised its plantation drive in collaboration with the Department of Land and Gardens. Prof. Mohd Mohsin Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor, AMU, was the Chief Guest, while Prof. M. Athar Ansari, Dean, Students’ Welfare; Prof. Mohammad Muzammil, Principal, ZHCET; and Prof. Asfar Ali Khan, OSD, Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat, attended as Guests of Honour.
Prof. Mohd Mohsin Khan emphasised the importance of collective efforts to strengthen the green cover of the University and promote environmental responsibility among students and staff.
Prof. Nabiullah Khan, Chairperson, Department of Applied Mathematics, said the plantation drive was aimed at fostering environmental awareness and a sustained sense of responsibility towards nature. He also expressed gratitude to Prof. Anwar Shahzad, Member In-Charge, Land and Gardens, for providing saplings and extending support for the programme.
Faculty members, research scholars, students and non-teaching staff participated in planting ornamental, fruit-bearing and shade-giving saplings at designated locations around the department. The participants also resolved to ensure proper care and maintenance of the planted trees.
At SaiyyidHamid Senior Secondary School (Boys), the plantation drive was led by Prof. Qudsia Tahseen, Director, Directorate of School Education, AMU, and Prof. Mohammad Azam Khan, Deputy Director, Directorate of School Education. They planted saplings on the school premises under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.
Prof. Qudsia Tahseen highlighted the importance of nurturing trees as a long-term investment in a healthier environment, while Prof. Mohammad Azam Khan stressed the need to inculcate environmental responsibility among students through such practical initiatives.
Principal Sabahuddin, Vice Principal Dr Mohammad Firdosh Khan, Examination In-Charge Mohammad Javed Khan and Warden In-Charge, AllamaIqbal Boarding House, Dr Qamre Alam also planted saplings in the school lawns. Prof. Qudsia Tahseen and Prof. Mohammad Azam Khan also inaugurated a newly beautified area at the school entrance and interacted with teachers before taking a round of the school.
Teachers and non-teaching staff participated in the programme, which concluded with a collective commitment to protect and nurture the planted saplings and contribute to a greener and more sustainable AMU campus.
