 AMU Launches Plantation Drive at Faculty of Arts under ‘Aaj Ka Hamara Mission: Chhaya’ as Part of UP Govt’s Vriksharopan Mahabhiyan 2026 

Aligarh, July 12: Aligarh Muslim University joined the Uttar Pradesh Government’s mega ‘Vriksharopan Mahabhiyan-2026’ with a plantation drive launched today from the Faculty of Arts campus premises under the theme “Aaj Ka Hamara Mission: Chhaya” (Today Our Mission is Shade)

 

The state-wide campaign, themed: “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam", One Tree in the Name of Mother, aims to increase green cover, maintain climatic balance, and conserve water. The government of UP has set a target of planting 35 crore saplings across the state. In a single day under Mission Chhaya, over 2 crore saplings will be planted along roadsides to develop shaded corridors and improve air quality.

 

The drive at AMU witnessed the plantation of Ficus Benghalensis Variegata, and Neem tree saplings in the Faculty of Arts premises.

 

The event was graced by the Chief Conservator of Forests, Aligarh Circle Shrimati Shradha Yadav, along with Prof. Naima Khatoon, Vice Chancellor, AMU, and Prof. Mohd Mohsin Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor

 

Other university officials and functionaries present included Prof. M Rizwan Khan, Dean, Faculty of Arts; MIC Land and Garden Prof. Anwar Shahzad; MIC PRO Prof. Vibha Sharma; University Librarian Prof. Nishat Fatima; Prof. MJ Warsi, Chairman Department of Linguistics; NSS Coordinator Dr Mohsin Khan, along with senior officials of the Forest Department and university administration and staff of university conservancy.

 

Prof. Naima Khatoon said, "Planting a tree is planting hope for the future. Through ‘Aaj Ka Hamara Mission: Chhaya’, AMU reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship. Every sapling we plant today will become the shade and lifeline for generations to come."

Prof. Mohd Mohsin Khan said, "This campaign is not just about planting trees; it is about building a culture of responsibility. I urge our students and faculty to nurture these saplings and make AMU a model green campus aligned with the vision of a Harit Uttar Pradesh."

 

Shrimati Shradha Yadav appreciated AMU’s participation and said that universities like AMU play a vital role in turning the campaign into a true jan-andolan. She emphasized that species like Neem, Ash, and Ficus Benghalensis are crucial for shade, biodiversity and improving air quality.

 

The programme concluded with a collective pledge to ensure the care and survival of the planted saplings and to continue such environmental initiatives across the university campus.
