Rameez Raja Presents Paper on Transgender Financial Inclusion at International Conference in Colombia

Aligarh, July 17: Rameez Raja, Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Economics, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), recently presented a research paper at the 34th Annual Conference of the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) held at Universidad ICESI, Cali, Colombia. His participation in the prestigious international conference was fully sponsored by IAFFE.

Pursuing his doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Mohd Azam Khan, Rameez presented a paper titled "Expanding Access to Banking and Financial Services: Determinants and Challenges for Transgender Inclusion in Delhi-NCR, India." The study forms part of his doctoral research on"Financial Inclusion Among the Transgender Community: A Case Study of Delhi-NCR."

The research examines the financial exclusion experienced by transgender persons in India despite the legal recognition of their gender identity by the Supreme Court in 2014. It argues that legal recognition, while significant, is not sufficient to ensure meaningful financial and economic inclusion.

During his presentation, Rameez highlighted the critical role of financial inclusion in promoting economic independence, dignity, and social participation among transgender individuals. The study identified major barriers to accessing formal financial services, including documentation-related challenges, discrimination, low levels of financial literacy, and limited livelihood opportunities.

The paper was well received by international scholars and researchers, generating meaningful discussions on feminist economics, financial inclusion, and social justice. The presentation showcased research emerging from AMU on a globally relevant issue and reflected the University's commitment to advancing evidence-based research that contributes to inclusive and equitable development.

Speaking on the occasion, Rameez Raja said that representing Aligarh Muslim University at a distinguished international academic forum was a matter of great pride and an opportunity to share research addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by marginalized communities.
