AMU Law Student Wins Second Prize at National IIFOMAS Symposium

ALIGARH, December 11: Mohammad Suhaib, a student of the Department of Law, Aligarh Muslim University, secured the second prize in the civilian category of the National-Level IIFOMAS Essay Writing Competition 2025. The award was conferred during the 2nd Annual Symposium of the India International Forum on Mine Action and Safety, held on December 9 at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi. Suhaib was felicitated by Lt. Gen. Dushyant Singh (Retd), Director General of the Centre for Land Warfare Studies.

The competition, organised by a defence think tank led by retired Army officers, drew participants from the armed forces, CAPFs, diplomatic circles, academia and the media. In the civilian category, the first prize went to Bill Christopher, while Suhaib secured the second position with a cash award of ₹7,000. Winners received certificates signed by IIFOMAS and CLAWS.

Suhaib’s essay, titled “The Imperative of Synergy: Government and Community Involvement in Explosive Ordnance Risk Mitigation,” argued for a collaborative approach to mine action that integrates government frameworks with local community expertise. Evaluators praised the paper for advancing a nuanced, community-inclusive perspective beyond traditional state-centric approaches.

The faculty members at the Department of Law have extended congratulations to Mohammad Suhaib for his commendable performance and meaningful contribution to discussions on humanitarian law and national safety.
