Nationalism Is a Shared Hindi–Urdu Literary Legacy: Prof. Shambhunath Tiwari

ALIGARH, November 29: Prof. Shambhunath Tiwari, Department of Hindi, Aligarh Muslim University, while addressing a national seminar of the Bhartiya Hindi Pradhyapak Parishad at Gautam Buddha University, Noida, asserted that nationalism shaped during India’s cultural renaissance is a shared literary legacy of Hindi and Urdu.

Prof. Tiwari said the freedom struggle was both a political and cultural awakening in which literature became a source of ideological strength and unity. He noted that Urdu, like Hindi and other Indian languages, played a decisive role in nurturing patriotic sentiment and fostering collective consciousness during colonial rule.

Recalling the events of 1857, he described the uprising as a cultural revolt as much as a military one, where poets and writers voiced resistance, openly or subtly, against oppression. Urdu literature, he said, became the “cultural soul” of the nationalist movement, inspiring harmony and challenging colonial dominance.

Highlighting the Progressive Writers’ Movement, Prof. Tiwari emphasised that Urdu writers were at the forefront of a nationwide cultural campaign for nationalism, and it remains an essential part of our shared Hindi–Urdu literary heritage.
