AMU Alumnus Honoured Among World’s Top Agri-food Pioneers
Aligarh, June 20: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has added another feather to its cap as its distinguished alumnus, Prof. Rajeev K. Varshney FRS, FAA, has been recognised by the World Food Prize Foundation among the Top Agri-food Pioneers (TAP) 2026, a select group of 40 global innovators chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of the prestigious award.
The honour acknowledges Prof. Varshney’s contributions to agricultural genomics, crop improvement and global food security. Through this research in genomics-assisted breeding, pangenomics and translational agricultural science, he has helped develop climate-resilient and high-yielding crop varieties, strengthening food systems across Asia, Africa and Australia and benefiting millions of farmers.
An alumnus of AMU, Prof. Varshney attributed his success to the strong academic foundation he received at the university. “AMU nurtured my intellectual curiosity, scientific temperament and commitment to excellence. I remain deeply grateful to my teachers and mentors whose guidance shaped my journey and inspired me to contribute to addressing global challenges in agriculture and food security,” he said.
