ALIGARH, June 2: The National Service Scheme (NSS), Department of Economics, Department of Pharmacology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), and Abdullah School of Aligarh Muslim University observed World No Tobacco Day 2026 through a series of awareness programmes aimed at highlighting the harmful effects of tobacco use and promoting tobacco-free lifestyles.
Leading the observance, NSS, AMU organised a special lecture on the harmful effects of tobacco. Dr. Mansoor Alam Siddiqui, Programme Officer, NSS and Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, highlighted the health hazards of tobacco use and passive smoking and stressed the importance of awareness, smoke-free public spaces and tobacco cessation support. Dr. Abdul Jabbar, Officiating Coordinator, NSS, called for greater community participation in creating a tobacco-free campus and society, while Dr. Fauzia Faridialso spoke on the occasion. The programme was conducted by Dr. Nahid Akbari.
The Department of Economics organised a No Tobacco Pledge programme in which faculty members, research scholars and staff participated. The pledge was administered by Chairman of the Department, Prof. Shehroz Alam Rizvi, who highlighted the adverse impact of tobacco on individual and family health and stressed the importance of creating awareness among the younger generation. Posters highlighting the harmful consequences of tobacco use were also displayed.
Meanwhile, the Department of Pharmacology, JNMC, organised a public lecture and awareness programme. Dr.BrahmankarNachiket Arun delivered an expert presentation on the public health burden of tobacco use, discussing its association with cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, stroke and various cancers. He also highlighted the dangers of passive smoking, nicotine addiction and the importance of early intervention and tobacco cessation.
In his concluding remarks, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman emphasised the importance of preventive healthcare, public awareness and community participation in reducing tobacco-related diseases and promoting healthier lifestyles.
As part of the observance, Abdullah School organised a staff awareness programme under the guidance of Superintendent Mrs. Umra Zaheer. The staff members were sensitised to the health hazards of tobacco use and administered the No Tobacco Pledge. The National Tobacco Quitline number was also shared to encourage awareness and support tobacco cessation efforts.
