AMU Marks World Environment Day with Plantation Drives and Awareness Programmes Across Campus
ALIGARH, June 6: Aligarh Muslim University observed World Environment Day 2026 through a series of plantation drives, awareness programmes and environmental initiatives organised by various departments, centres, schools and university units, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.
At Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sarojini Naidu Hall, in collaboration with the Department of Radiation Oncology, Eco Club, Land and Gardens Department and Wings of Desire NGO, organised a plantation campaign under the theme “Planting Hope, Healing Lives.” A total of 50 saplings were planted around the Cancer OPD premises. The programme was held under the supervision of Provost, S.N. Hall, Prof. Orus Ilyas and coordinated by Dr.Ruquiya Afrose. Prof. Anjum Parvez, Principal and CMS, J.N. Medical College,graced as Chief Guest, while Prof. Anwar Shahzad, Member In-Charge, Land & Garden, was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Mohammad Khalid, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Afifullah Khan, Department of Wildlife Sciences and Mohammad Akram, Chairman, Department of Radiation Oncologywere among the Special Guests. Cancer survivors also joined the plantation drive, symbolising hope and resilience.
The National Service Scheme (NSS), in collaboration with Women's College, organised a lecture and plantation drive. Chief Guest Dr. Faiza Abbasi highlighted issues of waste management and environmental ethics, while Principal Prof. Masud Anwar Alavi stressed the need for individual responsibility towards nature. Prof. Romana Siddiqui, Dr. Mansoor Alam Siddiqui, Dr. Fauzia Faridi and Dr. Nida Fatima also addressed the programme.
The Department of Civil Engineering, ZHCET, in collaboration with The Institution of Engineers (India) and NSS, organised a plantation drive and an awareness programme on climate action. The event was chaired by Prof. Amjad Masood and attended by Prof. Atul Kumar Mittal, Mr. Praveen Gupta, Dr. Vishwanath Sharma, Prof. Ateeque Ahmad and Dr. Anwar Ali Khan. The programme was coordinated by Prof. Sohail Ayub, Dr. Abdul Jabbar, Er. A. K. Jhunjhunwala and Prof. Nadeem Khalili, while Dr. Mohsina Ahmad conducted the proceedings.
The Department of Economics organised a plantation drive under the leadership of Chairman Prof. Shehroz Alam Rizvi for planting saplings that help purify air. Among those participating were Prof. S. M. Jawed Akhtar, Prof. Md. Tarique, Prof. Imtiaz Hasnain and Prof. Lubna Siddiqui of Jamia Millia Islamia. The Department also organised poster-making and slogan-writing competitions to promote environmental awareness.
Plantation drives were also organised by the Department of Geology under the leadership of Prof. Rashid Umar, Community College under the supervision of Prof. Mujib Ahmad Ansari, and by A.B.K. High School (Girls) under the guidance of Dr. Saba Hasan. Students and staff participated enthusiastically in plantation and awareness activities focused on biodiversity conservation, climate responsibility and sustainable living.
The College of Paramedical Sciences also observed the occasion through a plantation drive and environmental awareness programme under the leadership of Principal Prof. Qazi Ehsan Ali, while the Department of Zoology organised similar activities under the chairmanship of Prof. Qudsia Tahseen, emphasising the importance of biodiversity conservation and ecological sustainability.
Across the campus, participants pledged to adopt environmentally responsible practices and contribute towards building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future, in keeping with this year's World Environment Day theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
